The two cards, side by side
Everything below is resolved from each issuer’s current terms at build time. Sort by whichever column is binding for you — bonus value if you are optimizing a single year, net annual cost if you are deciding what to keep.

Which welcome offer is worth more?
| Venture | Venture X | |
|---|---|---|
| The offer | 75,000 miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening† | 75,000 miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening† |
| Worth, at our valuation | $1,275 | $1,275 |
| Spending required, per month | $1,333 for 3 mo | $1,333 for 3 mo |
| First-year value | $1,201 | $1,466 |
On first-year value — offer plus the credits we count, minus the year-one fee — the Venture X is ahead. That is the right column for a single-year decision and the wrong one for deciding what to keep, which is what the net-cost section below is for.
Both offers use a three-month window and similar thresholds, and both are earned on ordinary spending with no channel restriction. Neither is difficult.
The relevant difference is what arrives alongside the bonus. On the Venture X, the travel credit and anniversary miles land in the same twelve months, which is why its first-year value figure sits far above the Venture’s despite similar bonuses.
Which card earns faster on real spending?
A multiplier is only half an earn rate. The other half is what the currency is worth, so both columns below convert each rate into cents back per dollar at our published valuations — which is the only basis on which two different currencies can be compared at all.
Venture
- 5×Hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel8.5¢ back per dollar
- 5×Capital One Entertainment purchases8.5¢ back per dollar
- 2×Every other purchase, with no category caps3.4¢ back per dollar
Venture X
- 10×Hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel17.0¢ back per dollar
- 5×Flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel8.5¢ back per dollar
- 5×Capital One Entertainment purchases8.5¢ back per dollar
- 2×Every other purchase, with no category caps3.4¢ back per dollar
Outside the travel portal both pay a flat uncapped rate, and the Venture X pays more. Inside the portal the Venture X pays more again on hotels and rental cars.
There is no category structure on either card to learn or forget. That is the point of both of them, and it is why the earning comparison is one line rather than a table.
Whose perks survive contact with reality?
Issuers publish a benefits total that assumes you claim every credit, in the right channel, in the right month. We discount each one for how hard it is to claim and publish the discount in each card’s full review. The totals below are what survives that discounting.
| Venture | Venture X | |
|---|---|---|
| Credits at face value | $30 | $785 |
| What we actually count | $21 | $586 |
| Benefits with no dollar value assigned | 5 | 8 |
The Venture is deliberately thin: a Global Entry credit and two annual lounge visits. Nothing to enroll in, nothing to claim.
The Venture X adds the large annual travel credit, anniversary miles that post with no spending requirement, unlimited lounge access, primary rental-car coverage and cell phone protection. Lounge access for an additional cardholder is a separate annual charge on it, not the free benefit it used to be.
Because the Venture X’s two biggest credits require nothing of you, our discounting on them is light, which is exactly why the fee gap does not translate into a cost gap.
Which points are worth more when you redeem?
Identical in every respect: the same miles, the same partner list across all three alliances, the same mostly-1:1 ratios, the same travel eraser as a fixed-rate floor.
Neither fee buys a better redemption. If redemption value is your only concern, take the cheaper card.
Which card actually costs less to keep?
Annual fee minus the credits a realistic person claims. It is the number that decides what stays in your wallet after the welcome offer is spent, and it is the column almost no comparison publishes — because it makes premium cards look worse than an issuer’s own benefits arithmetic does. A negative figure means the card pays you to hold it.
| Venture | Venture X | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | $95 | $395 |
| Credits we count | −$21 | −$586 |
| Net annual cost | $74 | −$191 |
On our discounting the Venture X is the cheaper card to keep, which is not always the one with the smaller fee — a large fee returned in credits you cannot fail to claim beats a small fee returned in credits you can.
This is the comparison where the sticker price misleads most. The Venture X charges several times the Venture’s fee and, on our model, costs less to hold — because its credits are large, automatic and hard to fail to use.
The arithmetic only breaks if you never book travel through Capital One Travel. In that case the travel credit goes unclaimed and the Venture becomes the cheaper card by a wide margin.
Which is easier to get approved for?
Being declined costs a hard inquiry and returns nothing, and in almost every case the cause is an unpublished issuer rule rather than a credit score. Both sets are below in full.
The same rules govern both: roughly one new personal Capital One card every six months, most applicants capped at two open personal cards, and a hard pull on all three bureaus.
The Venture X expects an excellent credit profile; the Venture is available to a somewhat broader band. If you are not certain of approval on the premium card, the Venture is the lower-risk application.
Venture
Credit profile expected: Good to Excellent (690+)
- Capital One states that you are not eligible for this product if you have received a new-cardmember bonus for the Capital One Venture card or the Capital One Venture X card in the past 48 months.
- Not published by the issuer, but consistently reported: Capital One generally approves only one new personal credit card every six months.
- Not published by the issuer, but consistently reported: most applicants are limited to two open Capital One personal credit cards at a time, and Capital One is one of the few issuers that pulls all three credit bureaus on a consumer application.
Venture X
Credit profile expected: Excellent (740+)
- Capital One states that existing or previous cardmembers are not eligible for this product if they have received a new-cardmember bonus on this product in the past 48 months.
- Not published by the issuer, but consistently reported: Capital One generally approves only one new personal credit card every six months.

So which should you pick?
Read both columns and stop at the first line that describes you. If lines appear on both sides, the tiebreaker is the net annual cost above — a card you keep for five years is worth more than a bonus you earn once.
Pick the Venture if
- You will never enter an airport lounge.
- You book travel exclusively direct and would not use a booking portal.
- You want the lowest possible sticker fee for a card with a full transfer list.
- Your credit profile is good rather than excellent.
Pick the Venture X if
- You will use a lounge even a few times a year.
- Two of you travel together and both want lounge access.
- You book any travel through a portal and would recover the annual credit.
- You rent cars and want primary rather than secondary damage coverage.
The bottom line
The Venture X is the more expensive card and the cheaper one to hold — take the Venture only if you will genuinely never use a lounge or a booking portal.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Venture X worth the extra fee over the Venture?
For almost everyone, yes. The Venture X’s annual travel credit and anniversary miles together exceed the difference in annual fees, and both arrive with no enrollment and no spending requirement — so the premium card is cheaper to hold on our model despite costing more on the sticker. The exception is a cardholder who never books through a portal and never uses a lounge, for whom the extra fee buys nothing.
Do Venture and Venture X earn the same miles?
Yes — the same Capital One miles, transferable to the same partners at the same ratios, with the same travel eraser as a fixed-rate floor. Nothing about the Venture X’s fee raises the redemption ceiling. The premium buys credits, lounge access, primary rental coverage and higher portal earning, and nothing at all on the redemption side. It no longer buys free lounge access for a second cardholder — that is now charged annually.
Can I upgrade from the Venture to the Venture X?
Capital One does sometimes permit a product change between them, which avoids a new hard inquiry and preserves your account age. As with every issuer, a product change does not pay a welcome bonus, so if the bonus matters to you the decision has to be made at application time. Capital One’s velocity rules also make applying for both within six months unlikely to succeed.
