Transferable points or an airline card?
There are only two kinds of rewards card, and the difference between them is who decides what a point is worth. A transferable-points card earns a bank currency — Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou, Capital One miles, Bilt points — that you can move into any of that bank's airline and hotel partners at the moment you book. A co-brand card earns one airline's miles or one chain's points, and that is where they stay.
The practical consequence is timing. With a bank currency you look at the award price first, compare it against the cash fare, and only then decide which program to move the points into. With an airline mile you have already committed, months or years earlier, to whatever that airline decides its miles are worth on the day you want to fly. Every US airline currency we sample prices below every transferable bank currency we sample, and the gap is not close.
So the sequence for most people is: one transferable-points card that fits your spending, then a second one from a different bank once the first is established, then a co-brand card only if a specific benefit — a bag, a free night, status — pays for its own fee. If you are starting from zero, read points and miles for beginners first; it covers what a transfer actually does before you make one.
What does an annual fee actually buy?
An annual fee buys three things, in descending order of reliability: statement credits, benefits you cannot buy separately, and earning rates. Credits are the least reliable of the three, because an issuer designs them to be forgotten. A credit that posts automatically on any travel purchase is worth close to its face value. A credit that requires you to book through the issuer's own portal, enroll each year, or spend at one named merchant in monthly instalments is worth considerably less than its face value, and pretending otherwise is how a card's marketing page reaches a number four times its fee.
We handle that by discounting every credit by how hard it is to use, then publishing the result as a net annual cost: the fee minus the credits a realistic person redeems. It appears as a column in every comparison table on this site. A negative net cost means the card pays you to hold it — and several do, which is exactly the sort of claim that deserves to be shown with its arithmetic rather than asserted.
Why 5/24 decides the order you apply in
Chase declines applicants who have opened five or more personal credit cards from any issuer in the previous 24 months. Chase has never published the rule, will not discuss it, and does not make exceptions for income, score or existing relationship. Business cards from most issuers do not count toward the total, but they are still reported by some, so the safe assumption is that every personal card you open moves you one step closer to the gate.
This matters because Chase has the strongest transfer partner list most people can actually reach — a 1:1 route into World of Hyatt, which our model values at the top of the hotel market, and into Air Canada Aeroplan, which prices Star Alliance business class off a published distance table. If you want those, open the Chase cards first, while you are still under the threshold. Amex, Citi and Capital One have their own restrictions, but none of them shuts the door as completely.
The order that follows from this is boring and correct: Chase first, then whichever second bank currency suits your spending, then co-brands. Applying in the opposite order is the single most expensive sequencing mistake in this hobby, and it is entirely avoidable.
The flagship cards, compared
One card from each shape of the market, side by side. Bonus values and net annual costs are derived from our published point valuations and our usability-discounted perk model, not from issuer marketing — which is why some of these numbers are lower than the ones on the issuer's own page.

The strongest card in each category
Ranked within each category by our editorial score, which is computed from four sub-scores — rewards value, perks value, fee justification and flexibility — and stored with the card data, so the order below is the same order you would get by sorting the review pages yourself.
Travel cards that earn transferable points
The category most people should start and finish in. These earn a bank currency you can move into airline and hotel programs, which is what lets a point be worth more than a cent when it matters and never less than a cent when it does not.

No-annual-fee cards worth keeping forever
A no-fee card has one job beyond earning: it keeps an old account and its credit history open at zero cost, and in the Chase and Amex ecosystems it can feed points into a premium card you already hold.

Cash back, when points are not the point
If you will not book award travel, a cash-back card beats a travel card every time. There is no shame in it — a currency you will never redeem well is worth less than a cent, whatever the chart says.

Every card page on Award Rate
Seven pages, each maintained rather than published once. Every one names the date its card terms were last reconciled against the issuer's own pricing-and-terms disclosure.
- The best travel credit cardsOur full ranking, scored on four axes and rebuilt against live offers rather than the offers that were live when we first published.
- The best current sign-up bonusesEvery welcome offer we track, converted to dollars at our published point valuations so you can compare a points bonus to a cash one honestly.
- The best premium credit cardsWhich four-figure benefit stacks survive contact with a real calendar, and what each one costs per year once the usable credits are subtracted.
- The best airline credit cardsRanked by the benefits that pay for the fee — bags, boarding, award space — with the miles themselves valued at what our model says they are worth.
- The best hotel credit cardsEach card measured against its own annual free night, plus what the elite status it confers is worth at the chains we sample.
- Compare any two cards side by sideBonus, bonus value, annual fee, net annual cost, APR range and our score, in one sortable table you control.
- Every card review we have publishedFull reviews with the five-axis score, the cons written before the pros, and the date each rates-and-terms block was last reconciled with the issuer.
How we rate credit cards
Every card gets four sub-scores out of five — rewards value, perks value, fee justification and flexibility — and an overall score derived from them. Rewards value is measured against our published point valuations, so a card earning a currency we value poorly cannot score well on rewards no matter how many points it pays. Fee justification is scored against net annual cost, not against the headline fee. Flexibility is about where the points can go: a card earning a currency with fourteen transfer partners scores above an identical card earning one that has none.
We write the cons before the pros. It is a deliberate habit — a list of drawbacks written after a list of benefits tends to shrink to fit — and it is the reason the pros on this site are worth reading. Ratings are set before any commercial arrangement is considered, and no issuer sees a review before it publishes; that is written down in our editorial policy and it is the standard we expect to be held to. If we get something wrong, our corrections policy says what we do about it.
Frequently asked questions
How many credit cards should I have?
Enough to cover your two or three largest spending categories, and no more than you can pay in full every month. For most households that is two or three cards: one that earns transferable points on travel and dining, one that earns well on groceries or a flat rate on everything else, and sometimes one co-brand card for a specific airline benefit. Adding cards past that point produces diminishing returns and starts to constrain future approvals.Does applying for a credit card hurt my credit score?
A single application produces a hard inquiry and a small, temporary dip, usually recovered within a few months. The larger effect is indirect: a new account lowers your average account age, and issuers count recent applications when they decide. Applying once or twice a year is unremarkable to a scoring model; applying five times in a few months changes how every issuer sees you, and Chase in particular stops approving at that point. Is a credit card annual fee ever worth paying?
Only when the credits and benefits you will genuinely use exceed the fee — which is a question about your habits, not about the card. That is why we publish a net annual cost for every card: the fee minus the value of its credits, with each credit discounted for how difficult it is to actually redeem. A travel credit that requires booking through the issuer's own portal is worth less than a credit that posts automatically, and our model says so.What is the 5/24 rule?
Chase generally declines applicants who have opened five or more personal credit cards from any issuer in the previous 24 months. It is not published by Chase, it is not appealable, and income or credit score will not override it. Because Chase has the strongest transferable-points ecosystem for most people, it is the reason the order you apply in matters: open the Chase cards you want first, then everything else.Should I get the credit card for the airline I fly most?
Get it for the benefits, not the miles. A free checked bag on a family reservation, priority boarding and cardholder-only award availability can cover an airline card's fee on one or two trips a year. The miles are the weak part: every major US airline currency we sample values below every transferable bank currency we sample, so earn your points elsewhere and keep the co-brand card for what it uniquely gives you.Can I earn the same welcome bonus twice?
Sometimes, but the restrictions are card-specific and strictly enforced. Chase Sapphire bonuses are limited to once every 48 months and are blocked while you hold any Sapphire card. American Express applies a once-per-lifetime rule per card product, softened by a pop-up warning before you submit. Citi and Capital One use their own windows. Every restriction we know of is listed on the individual card review under application rules.
