Who should get the United Explorer — and who should skip it
Four things decide this: whether you have ever transferred points, whether you were buying it for a specific transfer partner, whether you are under 5/24, and — the one that overrides the other three — whether you carry a balance.
This is a benefits card for someone with a geographic reason to fly one airline. If you live at a United hub and take a handful of trips a year with a checked bag, the bag benefit alone settles the arithmetic, and everything else is upside.
The award-availability benefit is the reason to hold it beyond that. Cardholders searching for award seats see inventory that non-cardholders do not, which in practice means the difference between a saver-priced ticket and no ticket at all on busy routes. That benefit does not appear on any comparison table, including the ones on this site, because it cannot be quantified — but it is the reason experienced United flyers keep the card.
Skip it if United is not your default airline. The miles are among the weaker major airline currencies in our model, the earning rates are unremarkable, and a transferable-points card that includes United as a transfer partner gives you the miles when you need them without the annual fee.
What is the United Explorer welcome offer worth?
The offer is points, and the number that matters is not the headline — it is what the headline converts to at a redemption value we publish and defend. Here is the whole calculation.
- The current offer
- 50,000 points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening, Plus 10,000 bonus miles after you add an authorized user in the first 3 months — Chase advertises the pair as "up to 60,000". The 10,000 is awarded once, for the first authorized user only, and neither half counts toward Premier status.†
- Our published value for United MileagePlus
- 1.35¢ per point the sampling method behind this figure
- Points × our valuation
- $675
- Spending required to earn it
- $3,000 in 3 months
- Which means, per month
- $1,000on ordinary purchases, from account opening
- First-year value: offer + credits we count − year-one fee
- $918
The requirement is a three-month window at a modest level, which is among the easier bonuses in our set to clear on ordinary spending.
The bonus is paid in a currency our model values below the transferable bank currencies, so compare its dollar value rather than its headline number against a bank card’s offer. The bag benefit and award access are the reasons to take this card; the bonus is not.
How fast does the United Explorer earn?
The multiplier is only half of an earn rate. The other half is what the currency is worth, and a high multiplier on a weak currency loses to a low multiplier on a strong one. The right-hand column below is the one to read: it multiplies each rate by our published valuation to give what a dollar of spending in that category actually returns.
| Rate | What earns it | Back per dollar |
|---|---|---|
| 9× |
| 12.15¢ |
| 3× |
| 4.05¢ |
| 2× |
| 2.7¢ |
| 1× |
| 1.35¢ |
Everything outside those categories earns 1×, which is 1.35¢ back per dollar at our valuation. That is the rate most of a normal household’s spending earns, so it deserves more weight than the headline multiplier when you compare cards.
Earning is unremarkable across the board: an elevated rate on United purchases, dining and hotels booked directly, and a base rate on everything else. Nothing here beats a good general-purpose card.
The correct way to use this card is narrow — put United tickets on it, and put everything else on a card that earns a transferable currency. The Explorer is held for what it gives you, not for what it earns.
What are the United Explorer perks actually worth?
Issuers publish a benefits total that assumes you claim every credit, in the right channel, in the right month, every year. Almost nobody does. So we discount each credit by how hard it is to claim, and we publish the discount rather than the conclusion — if you think a discount is wrong for your own habits, the table gives you everything you need to redo the arithmetic yourself.
| Benefit | Face value | Our discount | What we count |

| First checked bag freeThe primary Cardmember and one companion on the same reservation each check a first standard bag free on United- and United Express-operated flights — United states up to $50 each way per person, up to $200 per round trip for two. Each pass admits one person — the Cardmember, an authorized user, or a guest they accompany. United states the pair is worth over $100. Access is subject to space availability, each pass carries its own expiration date, and passes cannot be sold, transferred or replaced. | $100 | −50% | $50 |
| Up to $100 in United Hotels credits$50 back as a statement credit on each of your first and second prepaid United Hotels stays of $50 or more, up to $100 per anniversary year. You must use "Pay Now" at booking — a stay booked to settle at the property does not qualify. | $100 | −50% | $50 |
| Up to $60 in rideshare creditsUp to $5 back as a statement credit each month on rideshare purchases, up to $60 per calendar year. Enrollment is required and must be renewed every year: an unenrolled cardholder receives nothing, and credits start only the day after enrollment. | $60 | −50% | $30 |

These benefits carry no dollar value in our model, either because they are insurance that pays only on a claim or because their value depends entirely on circumstances we cannot generalize. They are real, and they are excluded from the arithmetic above deliberately — counting them would let us inflate the card’s value without evidence.
- Cardmember award pricing. Primary Cardmembers book award flights on United and United Express for at least 10% fewer miles than members without an eligible card, and at least 15% fewer with MileagePlus Premier status. It applies only to the primary Cardmember’s own MileagePlus account, not to Money + Miles or cash tickets, and takes up to five weeks to become effective after the card is issued.
- Priority boarding. The primary Cardmember and companions on the same reservation board United- and United Express-operated flights before general boarding — after Premier members, Premier Access customers and travelers requiring special assistance. The MileagePlus number must be in the reservation; codeshare partner flights are excluded.
- Up to 1,000 Premier qualifying points each year. The primary Cardmember earns 1 PQP per $20 of net purchases, capped at 1,000 PQP per calendar year, counting toward Premier status tiers up to and including Premier 1K. Carried at no dollar value in our model: PQP move you along a status ladder rather than paying for anything.
- United travel credit after a spending threshold. $100 in United TravelBank cash after $10,000 of purchases in a calendar year, one per cardmember per year. TravelBank cash expires 12 months after issue, cannot be combined with travel certificates, future flight credit or miles, and is forfeited if you close the account. Carried at no value in our model: reaching the threshold means routing spending to a card that earns 1x on it.
- 10,000-mile award flight discount after a spending threshold. One 10,000-mile discount on an eligible United or United Express award flight after $20,000 of purchases in a calendar year. It only applies where more than 10,000 miles are being redeemed, and expires 12 months after issue. Carried at no value in our model for the same reason as the travel credit.
- Up to $50 in Avis and Budget travel credits. $25 in United TravelBank cash on each of your first and second Avis or Budget rentals per anniversary year. The rental must be at least two days, booked through cars.united.com with the MileagePlus number in the reservation and one of United’s specific Avis or Budget discount codes applied. Carried at no value in our model: the channel and code requirements are strict enough that most cardholders will miss them.
- Up to $120 in Instacart credits. A $10 Instacart credit each month, up to $120 per calendar year, on purchases made through Instacart with the card while an Instacart+ membership is active — which requires activating the complimentary Chase Instacart+ membership first. Chase states the benefit ends 12/31/27. Carried at no value in our model because it is an end-dated promotion, not a recurring benefit you can count on.
- Up to $100 in JSX credits. Up to $100 back as a statement credit each anniversary year on flights booked directly with JSX, a semi-private hop-on jet operator. Carried at no value in our model: JSX serves a short list of markets, and a credit spendable with one niche carrier is not money for most cardholders.
- Primary rental car collision damage waiver. Primary coverage when you decline the rental company’s collision insurance and charge the entire rental to the card, reimbursing up to $60,000 for theft and collision damage on most vehicles with an MSRP of $125,000 or less. For New York residents, coverage inside the United States is secondary to personal auto insurance.
- Trip cancellation, interruption and delay coverage. Up to $1,500 per covered traveler and $6,000 per trip for prepaid, non-refundable fares when a trip is canceled or cut short by a covered reason, plus up to $500 per covered traveler in unreimbursed meals and lodging when common carrier travel is delayed more than 12 hours or requires an overnight stay.
- Baggage delay and lost luggage coverage. Up to $100 a day for three days for essential purchases when bags are delayed over six hours, and up to $3,000 per covered traveler to repair or replace lost, damaged or stolen baggage. New York residents are limited to $2,000 per bag and $10,000 per trip on the lost luggage benefit.
- Purchase protection and extended warranty. Eligible new purchases are covered against damage or theft for 120 days, up to $10,000 per item (90 days for New York residents), and eligible US manufacturer warranties of three years or less are extended by an additional year.
The checked bag is the benefit that pays the fee, and it is worth reading the mechanics carefully: it covers the cardholder and one companion on the same reservation, so it scales with a traveling pair rather than an individual. Our model discounts it for the trips where you would not have checked a bag anyway.
Two annual lounge passes are a modest benefit and we discount them accordingly — a pass used on a short domestic layover is worth far less than its face value. The Global Entry credit is close to free money on its four-year cycle.
The rideshare credits are monthly and merchant-specific, which is the shape we discount hardest, though they attach to spending most people already do. The primary rental-car waiver is a genuine benefit that most co-branded airline cards do not carry.
What the card really costs each year
This is the number to compare across cards, and it is the one almost nobody publishes: the annual fee minus the credits a realistic person claims. A negative figure means the card pays you to keep it.
- Annual fee
- $0 intro, then $150
- Credits we count (from the table above)
- −$243
- Net annual cost, year two onward
- −$93Negative: on our discounting, the card returns more than it charges.
The fee is reduced in the first year, so year one and year two are different products. The figure above is the ongoing cost; the first-year fee is $0 against an ongoing $150, which is why the retention question below matters more on this card than on most.
How do you redeem United MileagePlus?
United miles are best spent on partner awards rather than United-operated ones. Partner business class still prices off a semi-fixed chart, while United’s own metal is fully dynamic and frequently prices like the cash fare.
The Excursionist Perk — a free one-way inside a qualifying multi-city award — is the program’s standout feature and is worth learning properly. It is the single most reliable way to get outsized value from this currency.
The most efficient way to hold United miles is often not to hold them at all: transfer from a bank currency when a specific booking appears, which avoids exposure to devaluation. That works precisely because United is a transfer partner of a major bank program.
The redemptions that justify holding this card
- United MileagePlus1:1 · Instant
- Multi-city Star Alliance awards that trigger the Excursionist Perk, where a whole segment in a second region prices at zero miles. Partner business class to Europe also prices off a semi-fixed table rather than the cash fare. One Chase Ultimate Rewards point becomes 1.35¢ here.
- United MileagePlus1:1 · Instant
- Excursionist Perk itineraries, where an entire segment in a second region prices at zero miles. One Bilt Rewards point becomes 1.35¢ here.
- United MileagePlus3:1, plus 5,000 bonus miles per 60,000 points transferred (2.4:1 at that increment) · 24–72 hours
- Topping up for an Excursionist Perk itinerary where you are a few thousand miles short. The conversion loses value; finishing the award recovers it.One Marriott Bonvoy point becomes 0.56¢ here.
You do not have to earn this currency to spend it. It can be topped up by transferring from Chase Ultimate Rewards and Bilt Rewards, which is usually the better way to hold a balance: flexible points are not exposed to a single program’s devaluation, and you can move them the day you find the seat.
Expiry. Miles never expire. United removed all mileage expiration in August 2019 and has not reintroduced it; an account with no activity for years keeps its full balance. Miles are forfeited only if the account itself is closed. Verified .
Our rating, axis by axis
Every card in the Award Rate database is scored on the same five axes, by the same people, before any commercial arrangement is considered. The rationale below is the reasoning, not a summary of the number.
What we like
- The checked bag benefit covers the fee outright on one round trip for two people, before any other perk counts
- Cardholders pay less for every United award ticket than members without the card, and Premier members save more still
- Primary rental car coverage on an airline card at this fee level is rare
- No foreign transaction fees, which matters on a carrier with this much international network
- The two lounge passes are a real benefit on a long connection, not a token
What we don’t
- The miles are locked to one airline and cannot be transferred out, so a devaluation has nowhere to run
- United-operated award pricing is fully dynamic and increasingly prices like the cash fare
- Earning rates away from United are modest — the card is held for its benefits, not for what it earns
- Chase’s application rules exclude a large share of engaged rewards travelers
- Lounge passes expire annually and cannot be banked, so an unused pair is simply lost
- Several of the newer partner credits are gated behind enrollment, specific booking channels or an end date, so the advertised credit total is well above what a normal cardholder collects
Is it worth keeping in year two?
Year two is the real test because the first-year fee waiver ends. Count your checked bags: if you took two round trips with a bag, the benefit alone covers the fee and the card stays. If you took none, the card is a subscription to award-search visibility, and only you can say whether that is worth the fee.
What to consider instead of the United Explorer
These are the cards we would genuinely put in front of the same reader. Sort the table by whichever column is binding for you — net annual cost matters if you are fee-sensitive, first-year value if you are optimizing a single year.
The card we score highest here is not the one you clicked on: it is the Sapphire Preferred. The badge on the United Explorer row says Reviewed here rather than Our pick because that is all it means — it marks the subject of this page, not a recommendation. Our scores are set before any commercial arrangement is considered, and we would rather publish the contradiction than hide it: if the rating column disagrees with the page you landed on, the rating column is the one to read.

- Sapphire Preferred
- Wins for almost anyone who is not loyal to United — it transfers to United at 1:1 when you need miles, and its points are worth more everywhere else.
- Venture X
- Wins if you want lounge access and flexible travel credits rather than benefits tied to one airline.
- Delta Gold
- Wins only if you fly Delta rather than United — the two cards are structurally similar and the choice is decided by geography. Read the full United Explorer vs Delta Gold comparison.
Will you be approved? The rules that get people declined
Being declined is the reader’s real risk on this page. A rejection costs a hard inquiry and leaves you with nothing, and in almost every case the reason is an issuer rule rather than your credit score. Chase applies the following to this card. None of them are published as policy, and none of them have an appeal.
Credit profile expected by Chase for this product: Good to Excellent (690+). A score inside that band does not guarantee approval, and nothing on this page should be read as a prediction of one — issuers weigh income, existing exposure and account history alongside the score.
We are not compensated for this card. It is here because it earned its place.
Frequently asked questions
Is the United Explorer card worth it?
Yes if you fly United more than twice a year and check a bag; no otherwise. The free checked bag covers the cardholder and a companion on the same reservation, so one round trip for two recovers the fee outright. Add expanded award availability — cardholders see saver seats that do not appear to other searchers — and the card justifies itself for a regular United flyer. For everyone else, a transferable-points card that lists United as a partner is the better tool.
What is United expanded award availability worth?
It cannot be priced, which is why no comparison table includes it, and it is still the benefit experienced United flyers value most. Cardholders searching award space see saver-level inventory that non-cardholders do not, which on busy routes and school-holiday dates is the difference between booking at the chart price and not booking at all. Treat it as the reason to keep the card once the bag benefit has paid the fee.
Are United miles worth collecting?
Selectively. United-operated awards price dynamically and often cost close to the cash fare, which caps what the currency is worth on domestic trips. The value sits in partner business class, which still prices off a semi-fixed chart, and in the Excursionist Perk, which adds a free one-way inside a qualifying multi-city award. Because United is a transfer partner of a major bank currency, the efficient approach is to hold flexible points and transfer only when a specific award appears.
