Citi Strata Premier® Card Review: The Card for Spending That Refuses to Fit a Category

Take the Strata Premier if your budget is spread across groceries, fuel, dining, flights and hotels rather than concentrated in one of them. It is the only card near this fee that pays an elevated rate on all five at once, and its transfer list reaches two carriers whose partner business-class pricing is the lowest in the market. Skip it if one category dominates your spending.

Updated Card terms verified

Who should get the Strata Premier — and who should skip it

Four things decide this: whether you have ever transferred points, whether you were buying it for a specific transfer partner, whether you are under 5/24, and — the one that overrides the other three — whether you carry a balance.

This is the card for the household whose budget refuses to be a pie chart with one big slice. Most category cards assume your spending is concentrated; this one assumes it is not, and pays the same elevated rate across the five lines that dominate ordinary household spending.

It is also the card for a redeemer who has learned enough to care about specific partners. The two carriers on this list that Chase and Amex cannot reach are, for certain long-haul routes, the cheapest way to sit at the front of the plane that exists — and that is a real reason to hold a card that otherwise looks unremarkable.

Skip it if a single category dominates. A dedicated grocery card or a dedicated dining card earns faster in its one lane than this card does in any of its five, and if most of your discretionary spending lives in that lane the specialist wins on total points. Skip it too if you need a deep US domestic redemption bench — that is this program’s weakest area.

What is the Strata Premier welcome offer worth?

The offer is points, and the number that matters is not the headline — it is what the headline converts to at a redemption value we publish and defend. Here is the whole calculation.

The current offer
60,000 points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening
Our published value for Citi ThankYou Points
1.7¢ per point the sampling method behind this figure
Points × our valuation
$1,020
Spending required to earn it
$4,000 in 3 months
Which means, per month
$1,333on ordinary purchases, from account opening
First-year value: offer + credits we count − year-one fee
$975

The offer is at its standard level rather than elevated, which is worth knowing before you apply. Citi runs elevated offers on this product in windows rather than continuously, and the elevated version has been materially larger — our offer history for this card shows where it has peaked. If you are not in a hurry, this is a card worth waiting on.

The spend requirement is a three-month window on ordinary purchases with no channel restriction. There is no enrollment, and the categories that earn the elevated rate are also the categories most people naturally spend in, so the requirement tends to clear itself.

How fast does the Strata Premier earn?

The multiplier is only half of an earn rate. The other half is what the currency is worth, and a high multiplier on a weak currency loses to a low multiplier on a strong one. The right-hand column below is the one to read: it multiplies each rate by our published valuation to give what a dollar of spending in that category actually returns.

Strata Premier earning rates, converted to cents back per dollarRates as published by Citi and verified . The final column applies our published valuation of Citi ThankYou Points — 1.7¢ per point — to each rate. Categories are grouped by multiplier; a category with no note beneath it is uncapped. How we value points.
RateWhat earns itBack per dollar

  • Air travel and other hotel purchases

  • Everything else
1.7¢

Everything outside those categories earns 1×, which is 1.7¢ back per dollar at our valuation. That is the rate most of a normal household’s spending earns, so it deserves more weight than the headline multiplier when you compare cards.

Five elevated categories at one rate is the whole idea, and the breadth is the point rather than the depth. Supermarkets, fuel and EV charging, restaurants, air travel and other hotel purchases all earn the same elevated rate, uncapped, with no quarterly activation and no rotating calendar.

The portal rate on hotels, car rentals and attractions is much higher but applies only inside Citi’s own booking channel, and Citi Travel’s pricing is not consistently competitive. Treat it as a bonus for bookings you were making there anyway.

Everything outside those categories earns the base rate, which is unremarkable. This is a card for the money you spend on living, not a card for a large one-off purchase.

What are the Strata Premier perks actually worth?

Issuers publish a benefits total that assumes you claim every credit, in the right channel, in the right month, every year. Almost nobody does. So we discount each credit by how hard it is to claim, and we publish the discount rather than the conclusion — if you think a discount is wrong for your own habits, the table gives you everything you need to redo the arithmetic yourself.

Strata Premier benefits at face value, and what we count them forFace value as stated by Citi. The discount reflects how hard a credit is to claim — channel restrictions, enrollment, monthly reset windows and merchant lists — not our opinion of the benefit. Benefits with no dollar value assigned are listed below the table.
BenefitFace valueOur discountWhat we count
Annual hotel savings benefit$100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more, excluding taxes and fees, booked through the Citi Travel portal, once per calendar year. You must pre-pay the complete stay with the card, points, or both, and the discount is applied at the time of booking. Packaged air-and-hotel or hotel-and-car rates do not qualify.$100−50%$50
Total$100−$50$50

These benefits carry no dollar value in our model, either because they are insurance that pays only on a claim or because their value depends entirely on circumstances we cannot generalize. They are real, and they are excluded from the arithmetic above deliberately — counting them would let us inflate the card’s value without evidence.

  • Points transfer to airline and hotel partners. Citi names American Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay, EVA Air, Choice Hotels and The Leading Hotels of the World among the partners, and sets a 1,000-point minimum transfer. See our Citi transfer partner guide for the full list and the current ratios.
  • The Reserve by Citi Travel. A curated set of 4.5- and 5-star properties bookable through Citi Travel, with daily breakfast for two, a $100 experience credit, early check-in and late checkout, and room upgrades subject to availability. Carried at no value in our model: it pays only on a stay you book through Citi Travel at a participating property, which is not a benefit anyone can count on annually.
  • Travel protection benefits. Trip cancellation and trip interruption on common carrier bookings, trip delay, lost or damaged luggage, and MasterRental car rental coverage.
  • Citi Entertainment presale access. Cardholder presales and reserved tickets for concerts, sport and dining events.
  • No foreign transaction fees. Purchases abroad settle at the Mastercard network rate with no issuer surcharge.

There is essentially one credit, an annual hotel savings benefit that requires a minimum booking through Citi’s channel — which is exactly the shape of credit our model discounts hardest, because it demands a specific booking in a specific place at a specific size.

The rest of the value is structural rather than promotional: no foreign transaction fees, World Elite Mastercard travel and purchase protections, and a transfer list. Nothing here needs enrolling in and nothing expires monthly, which is why our net annual cost figure for this card is unusually close to its sticker price.

That thinness is a fair trade at this fee. A card with five uncapped elevated categories and no coupon book is a more honest product than one with a longer benefits list you have to work to claim.

What the card really costs each year

This is the number to compare across cards, and it is the one almost nobody publishes: the annual fee minus the credits a realistic person claims. A negative figure means the card pays you to keep it.

How do you redeem Citi ThankYou Points?

Two partners justify this card’s place. One Star Alliance carrier prices partner business class off a distance-based chart that has survived while its peers moved to dynamic pricing; one oneworld carrier prices its own long-haul business class at a level the US programs cannot match. Neither is reachable from Chase.

A European partner shared with the other bank currencies runs monthly promotional awards, and the ability to reach it from a third currency is genuinely useful when a transfer bonus lands on one program and not another.

The weakness is domestic. There is no strong US airline partner and no fixed-chart hotel program, so ThankYou Points are a long-haul premium-cabin currency rather than an everything currency. Know that before you make this your only card.

Every partner the program publishes appears below, including the ones we would tell you not to use — an incomplete list is worse than none, because you cannot tell whether a missing partner means “not a partner” or “we forgot”. The final column resolves each ratio into what one point becomes after the transfer, which is the only honest way to rank them.

Transfers are one-way and permanent. No bank has ever reversed one. Confirm the ratio on Citi ThankYou Points’s own transfer page and find award space in the partner’s program before you move a single point — a transfer made against space that turns out not to exist cannot be undone. Points do not expire while you hold an open, eligible ThankYou account. When your last eligible account closes you have 90 days to use the remaining balance before it is forfeited. Citi also forfeits points on accounts more than 60 days past due, and points earned on a closed product are pooled into your remaining accounts rather than lost, provided one remains open.

Transfers cannot be reversed by any issuer, ever. Confirm the ratio on Citi’s own transfer page before you move points, and never transfer speculatively — transfer only once you have found the award seat you intend to book. Full detail on our Citi ThankYou Points program page.

Our rating, axis by axis

Every card in the Award Rate database is scored on the same five axes, by the same people, before any commercial arrangement is considered. The rationale below is the reasoning, not a summary of the number.

Award Rate rating: Strata Premier

4.4out of 5

Rewards valueWhat a normal spending year earns, priced at our published point valuations.
Perks & creditsBenefit value after discounting the credits most people never fully use.
Fee justificationWhat comes back to you measured against what the card costs to keep.
FlexibilityHow many ways the currency moves, and how good the best of those ways are.

Why this score: Scores highest of any card we track on rewards value at a sub-three-figure fee, because its elevated categories cover groceries, fuel, dining, air travel and hotels simultaneously — a combination no competitor matches. It scores poorly on perks: there is essentially one credit, and it is conditional on portal use. The overall rating reflects a card that earns exceptionally and gives back almost nothing, which is the right trade for a heavy spender and the wrong one for a light one.

What we like

  • Bonus categories cover more of a normal household’s budget than any competitor near this fee
  • Gas and EV charging earn the elevated rate, which almost no other travel card at this price offers
  • Transfer partners include two carriers whose award pricing on partner business class is consistently among the lowest available anywhere
  • Points from Citi’s cash-back cards can be pooled here and become transferable, which quietly upgrades an entire Citi portfolio
  • No foreign transaction fees

What we don’t

  • The hotel benefit requires a booking through Citi’s portal above a minimum stay value, so many cardholders never trigger it
  • The best transfer partners have poor award search tools, and one of them still requires phoning an agent for many bookings
  • There is no lounge access, no application-fee credit and no meaningful travel credit — the value is all in earning, not perks
  • Citi’s application rules are among the strictest in the market and are enforced quietly at the point of approval
  • Trip protections are Mastercard-administered and less generous than the issuer-backed coverage on competing travel cards

Is it worth keeping in year two?

Retention here is easier than on most travel cards because there is almost nothing to audit: no monthly credits, no enrollment, no expiring benefits. The question is simply whether five elevated categories at our published valuation beat the fee against a no-fee alternative. For a household spending normally across food, fuel and travel, they do — and if they do not, the answer is a no-fee card rather than a different fee.

What to consider instead of the Strata Premier

These are the cards we would genuinely put in front of the same reader. Sort the table by whichever column is binding for you — net annual cost matters if you are fee-sensitive, first-year value if you are optimizing a single year.

The card we score highest here is not the one you clicked on: it is the Sapphire Preferred. The badge on the Strata Premier row says Reviewed here rather than Our pick because that is all it means — it marks the subject of this page, not a recommendation. Our scores are set before any commercial arrangement is considered, and we would rather publish the contradiction than hide it: if the rating column disagrees with the page you landed on, the rating column is the one to read.

The Strata Premier against the alternatives we would recommend to the same reader — welcome offer, annual fee, net annual cost after usable credits, and our score. Sapphire Preferred
Wins if you want the fixed-chart hotel partner and stronger travel protections, and your spending is weighted toward dining and travel rather than groceries and fuel. Read the full Strata Premier vs Sapphire Preferred comparison.
Venture
Wins if you would rather have one flat rate on everything than five categories to remember, and want a guaranteed cash-equivalent floor.
Venture X
Wins if you want lounge access — its credits more than cover the fee difference for anyone who travels regularly.

Will you be approved? The rules that get people declined

Being declined is the reader’s real risk on this page. A rejection costs a hard inquiry and leaves you with nothing, and in almost every case the reason is an issuer rule rather than your credit score. Citi applies the following to this card. None of them are published as policy, and none of them have an appeal.

Credit profile expected by Citi for this product: Good to Excellent (690+). A score inside that band does not guarantee approval, and nothing on this page should be read as a prediction of one — issuers weigh income, existing exposure and account history alongside the score.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is the Citi Strata Premier worth it?

It is the best card in its fee bracket for a household with genuinely spread-out spending, and unremarkable for anyone else. Five uncapped elevated categories — supermarkets, fuel and EV charging, restaurants, air travel and hotels — is more bonus coverage of ordinary household spending than any competitor at this price, and there are no monthly credits to claim. If one category dominates your budget, a specialist card will out-earn it.

  • Are Citi ThankYou Points worth less than Chase or Amex points?

Slightly, in our published model, and for a specific reason: partner coverage on domestic routes is thin and several of the best partners are difficult to search. The ceiling is not lower — two of Citi’s partners price long-haul business class below anything Chase can reach — but the median redemption is, because more holders end up taking a weaker option. If you will do the work to book the good partners, the gap closes.

  • What is the Citi 8/65 rule?

Citi generally approves only one new personal card in any eight-day window and no more than two in any 65-day window, counted across its entire consumer portfolio rather than per product family. It is separate from the 48-month bonus lockout, which disqualifies you from this card’s welcome offer if you opened or closed a Strata Premier, Citi Premier or Prestige account in the previous four years.

  • Strata Premier or Sapphire Preferred?

Strata Premier if your grocery and fuel spending is significant, Sapphire Preferred if your travel and dining spending is. The Citi card covers more of an ordinary household budget at an elevated rate; the Chase card has better travel protections, a primary rental-car waiver, and access to a fixed-chart hotel partner that is the single highest-value redemption available from any US bank currency. Both sit at a similar fee, so this is a question about your spending, not your budget.

About the author

Editor, Award Rate

Nicholas Miles writes and maintains every page on Award Rate, and the site is built so that none of those pages has to be taken on faith: every card figure is rendered from a structured record that is checked against the issuer’s own pricing-and-terms disclosure, and the build fails if a number appears in prose instead. The points side of the site is lived-in rather than theoretical — Nicholas holds and tracks balances across ten loyalty programs — transferable bank currencies and the airline and hotel programs they feed — and recently took the family on a multi-stop award trip across Korea, Japan and Hawaii, flown mostly on points — the multi-seat, fixed-dates redemption problem most points advice quietly ignores. The conflicts that come with that are disclosed rather than hidden: the editor personally collects and redeems points in programs this site covers, the site is funded by affiliate commission disclosed on every offer page, and no issuer, airline or hotel group has any other relationship with it.

Award Rate is an independent publisher and comparison service, not an investment or financial advisor. Some of the card offers on this site are from advertisers who compensate us when you are approved through our links. That compensation may affect where and in what order offers appear, but it never affects our ratings, our point valuations, or what we recommend. We do not review every card on the market, and card offers displayed here may not include all available offers.

Where the numbers come from

Our editorial team writes and scores every review before any commercial arrangement is considered. Issuers do not review, approve, or endorse our content.

Dollar values are derived from the published Award Rate valuation model rather than from issuer marketing, and the model is republished with its sample sizes each quarter.

Rates and terms for the cards on this page

Every figure shown for these cards was reconciled against the issuer’s own pricing-and-terms disclosure on or before . Issuers may change offers, rates and terms at any time without notice — confirm the current terms on the issuer’s page before you apply.
