Is Citi ThankYou Points worth using?
Collect it if
- You want the cheapest published price for Star Alliance business class and will spend an afternoon on the phone to get it.
- You fly to the Middle East or Asia and want Qatar Avios within reach.
Look elsewhere if
- You want to book everything online in ten minutes.
- You need broad domestic coverage — the partner list is thin there.
What is one Citi ThankYou Points point worth?
Short answer
1.7¢ in the Award Rate Q3 2026 model, the median of 9,110 sampled redemptions priced against the cash cost of the same booking on the same date. Half of those redemptions returned less than that figure. It ranks 5 of 5 among the bank currencies we value, where the category median is 1.8¢.
How the number is derived
The published Award Rate figure for ThankYou Points, the median of 9,110 sampled redemptions. Turkish Miles&Smiles and Qatar Avios open genuinely cheap premium-cabin space and carry the number; thin domestic coverage and several partners that are hard to search cap it. The sample deliberately includes the ticketing failures — an award you could not book does not count as a redemption.
Citi ThankYou Points’s pricing mechanism
How does Citi ThankYou Points price an award?
What it means in practice
No award chart — priced through partners. There is no award chart here, because there are no awards here. A bank currency buys nothing directly; it becomes a partner’s currency and then prices at whatever that partner charges. So its value is not one mechanism but a weighted blend of every partner’s — plus the fixed-value floor the bank will always take the points back at, which is where a large share of real redemptions actually happen.
Read the pricing mechanism before the valuation, not after it. The valuation is a consequence of the mechanism rather than an independent fact about the program: a currency priced off the cash fare cannot beat the cash fare by much, however well you redeem, and a currency governed by a published table holds its value until the table changes.
How to earn Citi ThankYou Points points
Citi ThankYou Points is earned on credit card spend and nowhere else, which is the defining feature of a transferable currency: no flying and no stays are required to build a balance. Points from several cards in the same family generally pool into one account, so a no-annual-fee card can feed a balance that only becomes transferable through a premium one.

Citi ThankYou Points transfer partners
All 18 partners Citi ThankYou Points publishes — including the ones we tell readers not to use, because a partner list with its bad entries removed cannot be used to make a decision. Ranked by what one point is worth after the transfer rather than by the ratio, which is the only ordering that answers the question you are asking.
| Transfer timeTypical, not guaranteed | Sweet spot — what to actually book | |||

| Accor Live Limitless | 2:1 (2,000 points become 1,000 Accor points, worth €20)fewer points out than in | Instant to 48 hours | 1.0¢Loses value−0.70¢ vs. keeping the points as Citi ThankYou Points | None. Accor points are fixed at €0.02 each, so this transfer converts a 1.7¢ point into roughly 1¢ of hotel credit. The only argument for it is that Accor credit never devalues.Transfer bonuses: Rarely bonused. The ratio has not moved. |

Transfers are one-way and permanent. No bank has ever reversed one. Confirm the ratio on Citi ThankYou Points’s own transfer page and find award space in the partner’s program before you move a single point — a transfer made against space that turns out not to exist cannot be undone. Points do not expire while you hold an open, eligible ThankYou account. When your last eligible account closes you have 90 days to use the remaining balance before it is forfeited. Citi also forfeits points on accounts more than 60 days past due, and points earned on a closed product are pooled into your remaining accounts rather than lost, provided one remains open.

What Citi ThankYou Points does well, and what it does badly
The weaknesses below are the reason the strengths are worth believing. Every one of them is something we have watched cost a reader money or a booking.
What Citi ThankYou Points does well
- Turkish Miles&Smiles and Qatar Privilege Club are reachable from Citi and from very few other places, and both price premium cabins off a genuine fixed chart rather than the cash fare.
- Wyndham at 1:1 and Choice at 1:2 produce two of the only high-value hotel conversions available from a bank currency — Wyndham’s flat-rate Vacasa vacation rentals in particular can clear 3¢ a point.
- Points earned on no-annual-fee Custom Cash, Double Cash and Rewards+ cards become fully transferable once combined with a Strata Premier or Prestige account, so the earning side of the ecosystem is nearly free.
- Every airline partner transfers at a clean 1:1 — there is not a single penalty ratio on the airline list, which is not true of Amex or Capital One.
- Citi allows point transfers between ThankYou accounts of different people, subject to an annual cap, which no other major bank currency permits.
What Citi ThankYou Points does badly
- There is no US legacy airline partner at all. No United, no American, no Delta, no Alaska, no Southwest — the only domestic option is JetBlue, so short-haul domestic redemptions are largely out of reach.
- Several of the most valuable partners — Turkish, Thai, Malaysia, EVA — have booking engines that cannot reliably ticket partner awards online, so the theoretical value requires persistence, phone calls and sometimes days of waiting.
- Transfer bonuses run a few times a year rather than most months, so there is far less opportunity to buy in below face value than with Amex.
- A transferable balance requires an open Strata Premier, Prestige or eligible Citi premium account; without one the points redeem at a fixed cent or less.
- Citi’s ThankYou portal and customer service are the weakest of the major bank programs, and transfers that fail to arrive can take weeks to trace.
Do Citi ThankYou Points points expire?
Policy in full
Points do not expire while you hold an open, eligible ThankYou account. When your last eligible account closes you have 90 days to use the remaining balance before it is forfeited. Citi also forfeits points on accounts more than 60 days past due, and points earned on a closed product are pooled into your remaining accounts rather than lost, provided one remains open.
Expiration policy is the fact most worth checking before you build a balance and the one most often stated loosely elsewhere. An inactivity clock that any qualifying activity resets is a mild inconvenience; a hard deadline that runs from the day the points land is a different kind of risk entirely, and it changes whether a speculative transfer into this program is defensible at all.

Frequently asked questions
How much is one Citi ThankYou Points point worth?
1.7¢ in the Award Rate Q3 2026 model. That is the median, not the maximum — half of the redemptions behind it returned less. The published Award Rate figure for ThankYou Points, the median of 9,110 sampled redemptions. The sample deliberately includes the ticketing failures — an award you could not book does not count as a redemption. Is Citi ThankYou Points better than Chase Ultimate Rewards, Bilt Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards and Capital One Miles?
Not on value per point. Citi ThankYou Points is worth 1.7¢ against 1.83¢, the median of the other 4 bank currencies we value, and Chase Ultimate Rewards leads the category at 1.9¢. Per-point value is not the whole comparison — how fast a program earns, and whether it has properties or routes where you actually travel, can outweigh it — but it is the part that is comparable, and this is where it lands. Every currency we value, side by side.Which programs can I transfer Citi ThankYou Points to?
Citi ThankYou Points publishes 18 transfer partners. The ones worth using are Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Avianca LifeMiles; the full list, with ratios, transfer times and what one point is worth after each conversion, is in the table on this page. What is the biggest mistake people make with Citi ThankYou Points?
Transferring to Turkish before an agent has confirmed the seat can actually be ticketed. It is the failure mode we see most often, and in a program with dynamic pricing there is no chart to fall back on when it goes wrong.
