Avianca LifeMiles: is it worth collecting?

Yes, in specific cases. LifeMiles prices Star Alliance awards off a fixed chart and adds no fuel surcharges, which on surcharge-heavy partners is worth considerably more than the mileage price alone suggests. The program’s own service is the weak point, and miles can be bought outright during promotions.

Is Avianca LifeMiles worth using?

Collect it if

  • You want to fly a surcharge-heavy partner without paying the surcharge.
  • You will buy miles during a promotion against an award you have already found.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want dependable customer service when a booking goes wrong.
  • You want to hold a balance for years rather than spend it.

What is one Avianca LifeMiles mile worth?

Short answer

1.4¢ in the Award Rate Q3 2026 model, derived from a smaller sample than the currencies in our headline model. Half of those redemptions returned less than that figure. It ranks 5 of 12 among the airline currencies we value, where the category median is 1.4¢.

How the number is derived

Derived from an 800-itinerary sample of Star Alliance partner awards, computed against the all-in cash fare rather than the base fare — LifeMiles passes through no carrier surcharges, so the mile is doing more work per point than a program that bills you $500 alongside the award. The number is then capped by the price of buying LifeMiles outright during a 100%-plus bonus sale, which is roughly 1.4¢ and functions as a hard ceiling on what any LifeMiles redemption can be worth.

Avianca LifeMiles’s pricing mechanism

How does Avianca LifeMiles price an award?

What it means in practice

Published award chart. The award price is set by a table the program publishes and commits to. When a cash rate triples for a conference, a holiday or a sold-out weekend, the award price does not move. This is where nearly all the value in this hobby lives, and the number of programs still doing it shrinks every year.

Read the pricing mechanism before the valuation, not after it. The valuation is a consequence of the mechanism rather than an independent fact about the program: a currency priced off the cash fare cannot beat the cash fare by much, however well you redeem, and a currency governed by a published table holds its value until the table changes.

How to earn Avianca LifeMiles miles

Three routes into a Avianca LifeMiles balance: flying Avianca LifeMiles or its partners, a co-brand credit card, and — where the program is reachable — transferring from a bank currency. For most readers the third is the one that matters, because it converts spending on everything into a balance in a program you might only use once a year.

How to move points into Avianca LifeMiles

4 transferable bank currencies reach this program. The last column is what one bank point becomes once it lands here, at our Q3 2026 valuation of 1.4¢ per mile.

The redemptions that make Avianca LifeMiles worth collecting

A currency is worth collecting because of specific redemptions, not because of an average. These are the ones that justify Avianca LifeMiles, ranked by what one transferred point is worth when it lands.

  1. Bilt Rewards Avianca LifeMiles1:1 · 1.4¢ per point transferred · Instant to 24 hours

Lufthansa and Swiss business class with no carrier surcharges — an award that settles for under $100 in cash.

  2. American Express Membership Rewards Avianca LifeMiles1:1 · 1.4¢ per point transferred · Instant to 24 hours

Lufthansa and Swiss business class to Europe with no carrier surcharges — LifeMiles is the only Star Alliance program that does not pass them through, so the award settles for under $100 in cash.

  3. Capital One Miles Avianca LifeMiles1:1 · 1.4¢ per point transferred · Instant to 24 hours

Lufthansa and Swiss business class to Europe with zero carrier surcharges — the same seat Aeroplan would sell you with $600 attached.

  4. Citi ThankYou Points Avianca LifeMiles1:1 · 1.4¢ per point transferred · Instant to 24 hours

Lufthansa and Swiss business class to Europe with no carrier surcharges at all — an award that settles for under $100 in cash rather than $600.

  5. Marriott Bonvoy Avianca LifeMiles3:1, plus 5,000 bonus miles per 60,000 points transferred (2.4:1 at that increment) · 0.58¢ per point transferred · 24–72 hours

LifeMiles charges no carrier surcharges, so converted points buy a Lufthansa or Swiss business seat with under $100 of cash attached.

What Avianca LifeMiles does well, and what it does badly

The weaknesses below are the reason the strengths are worth believing. Every one of them is something we have watched cost a reader money or a booking.

What Avianca LifeMiles does well

  • LifeMiles passes on no carrier-imposed surcharges on Star Alliance partner awards, so a Lufthansa or Swiss business ticket to Europe settles for well under $100 in taxes — the same seat booked through Aeroplan can carry $600 in fees.
  • The award chart is published and region-based, so partner premium cabins have a fixed ceiling that does not move with the cash fare.
  • Miles can be bought outright during frequent 100%-plus bonus sales, which puts a hard cash cap on what any award can cost you and makes the program a genuine backstop when a transfer would be too slow.
  • More bank currencies reach LifeMiles than almost any other airline program — Amex, Citi, Capital One, Bilt and Wells Fargo — and bonuses into it are common.
  • Cash-and-miles pricing lets you top up a short balance rather than abandoning a booking.

What Avianca LifeMiles does badly

  • The booking engine is genuinely unreliable: it drops partner space mid-search, prices phantom seats that fail at ticketing, and has been known to take payment without issuing a ticket.
  • Awards are effectively non-refundable in practice, change fees are steep, and getting money back after a failed booking can take months of follow-up.
  • Mixed-cabin pricing rules mean a single economy segment can reprice an entire business-class itinerary at the higher band without warning.
  • Customer service is the weakest of any program we book with, and there is no meaningful escalation path.
  • A 12-month inactivity clock — the shortest in this set — means a transferred balance needs deliberate maintenance.

Do Avianca LifeMiles miles expire?

Policy in full

Miles expire after 12 consecutive months with no earning or redeeming activity — the shortest inactivity window of any program we cover. Any activity resets it, including a small shopping-portal purchase or a transfer in. Holders of an eligible LifeMiles co-brand card and members with LifeMiles elite status are exempt while the card or status is active.

Expiration policy is the fact most worth checking before you build a balance and the one most often stated loosely elsewhere. An inactivity clock that any qualifying activity resets is a mild inconvenience; a hard deadline that runs from the day the points land is a different kind of risk entirely, and it changes whether a speculative transfer into this program is defensible at all.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much is one Avianca LifeMiles mile worth?

1.4¢ in the Award Rate Q3 2026 model. That is the median, not the maximum — half of the redemptions behind it returned less.
  • Is Avianca LifeMiles better than Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, Air Canada Aeroplan, Alaska Atmos Rewards, American Airlines AAdvantage, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, British Airways Executive Club, Southwest Rapid Rewards, United MileagePlus, Air France-KLM Flying Blue and Delta SkyMiles?

Not on value per mile. Avianca LifeMiles is worth 1.4¢ against 1.4¢, the median of the other 11 airline currencies we value, and Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles leads the category at 1.6¢. Per-point value is not the whole comparison — how fast a program earns, and whether it has properties or routes where you actually travel, can outweigh it — but it is the part that is comparable, and this is where it lands. Every currency we value, side by side.
  • Should I move Bilt Rewards or American Express Membership Rewards miles in first?

Bilt Rewards, on the arithmetic: it moves at 1:1, so one bank point lands as 1.4¢ of value here, against 1.4¢ from American Express Membership Rewards at 1:1. Where two ratios are equal the tie-breaker is what else each currency can do for you: spend the one with the thinner list of alternative uses and keep the flexible one. Either way the transfer is one-way, so price the award seat first. Both routes, with transfer times
  • What is the biggest mistake people make with Avianca LifeMiles?

Buying miles speculatively rather than against a confirmed, priced award. It is the failure mode we see most often, and in a program with a published chart it is the difference between the value the chart offers and a redemption at the floor.

About the author

Editor, Award Rate

Nicholas Miles writes and maintains every page on Award Rate, and the site is built so that none of those pages has to be taken on faith: every card figure is rendered from a structured record that is checked against the issuer’s own pricing-and-terms disclosure, and the build fails if a number appears in prose instead. The points side of the site is lived-in rather than theoretical — Nicholas holds and tracks balances across ten loyalty programs — transferable bank currencies and the airline and hotel programs they feed — and recently took the family on a multi-stop award trip across Korea, Japan and Hawaii, flown mostly on points — the multi-seat, fixed-dates redemption problem most points advice quietly ignores. The conflicts that come with that are disclosed rather than hidden: the editor personally collects and redeems points in programs this site covers, the site is funded by affiliate commission disclosed on every offer page, and no issuer, airline or hotel group has any other relationship with it.

How Award Rate makes money

Award Rate is an independent publisher and comparison service, not an investment or financial advisor.
