transferable bank currency

Capital One Miles: is it worth collecting?

Yes, as a first transferable currency. Capital One reaches more partners than any other US bank and every mile has a hard cash floor beneath it, so a beginner cannot strand a balance. The ceiling is lower than Chase’s precisely because that floor is where most holders actually redeem.

Is Capital One Miles worth using?

Collect it if

  • You are new to this and want a currency that cannot go to waste while you learn.
  • You want the broadest partner list, including Avianca LifeMiles and Aeroplan at 1:1.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want World of Hyatt. Capital One does not reach it, and that is the single biggest gap in the list.
  • You would default to erasing travel purchases, which caps every mile at the floor.

What is one Capital One Miles mile worth?

Short answer

1.7¢ in the Award Rate Q3 2026 model, the median of 11,260 sampled redemptions priced against the cash cost of the same booking on the same date. Half of those redemptions returned less than that figure. It ranks 4 of 5 among the bank currencies we value, where the category median is 1.8¢.

How the number is derived

The published Award Rate figure for Capital One Miles, the median of 11,260 sampled redemptions. Air Canada, Avianca LifeMiles and British Airways Avios at 1:1 carry the number. The hard 1¢ floor for erasing a travel purchase caps it, and it caps it hard, because a large share of Venture holders default to that redemption and never transfer at all.

Capital One Miles’s pricing mechanism

How does Capital One Miles price an award?

What it means in practice

No award chart — priced through partners. There is no award chart here, because there are no awards here. A bank currency buys nothing directly; it becomes a partner’s currency and then prices at whatever that partner charges. So its value is not one mechanism but a weighted blend of every partner’s — plus the fixed-value floor the bank will always take the points back at, which is where a large share of real redemptions actually happen.

Read the pricing mechanism before the valuation, not after it. The valuation is a consequence of the mechanism rather than an independent fact about the program: a currency priced off the cash fare cannot beat the cash fare by much, however well you redeem, and a currency governed by a published table holds its value until the table changes.

How to earn Capital One Miles miles

Capital One Miles is earned on credit card spend and nowhere else, which is the defining feature of a transferable currency: no flying and no stays are required to build a balance. Points from several cards in the same family generally pool into one account, so a no-annual-fee card can feed a balance that only becomes transferable through a premium one.

Capital One Miles transfer partners

All 21 partners Capital One Miles publishes — including the ones we tell readers not to use, because a partner list with its bad entries removed cannot be used to make a decision. Ranked by what one mile is worth after the transfer rather than by the ratio, which is the only ordering that answers the question you are asking.

Capital One Miles transfer partners, ranked by what a point is worth after the transferAll 21 published partners. “One point becomes” applies the transfer ratio to our published valuation of the destination currency. Gain and loss are measured against keeping the points as Capital One Miles at 1.7¢ per point, which is what these points are worth if you do nothing — how we value points. Transfers are one-way and permanent. No bank has ever reversed one. Confirm the ratio on Capital One Miles’s own transfer page and find award space in the partner’s program before you move a single point — a transfer made against space that turns out not to exist cannot be undone. Miles do not expire for the life of the account. There is no inactivity clock and no earning requirement. Closing the account forfeits any remaining balance, so transfer miles out to a partner before you close a Venture, VentureOne or Spark card. Miles cannot be moved between two different people’s Capital One accounts.

The redemptions that make Capital One Miles worth collecting

A currency is worth collecting because of specific redemptions, not because of an average. These are the ones that justify Capital One Miles, ranked by what one transferred point is worth when it lands.

What Capital One Miles does well, and what it does badly

The weaknesses below are the reason the strengths are worth believing. Every one of them is something we have watched cost a reader money or a booking.

What Capital One Miles does well

  • Twenty-one partners spanning all three alliances plus unaligned carriers, and eighteen of them at a clean 1:1 — the broadest airline reach after Amex.
  • The core cards earn a flat, uncapped 2x on everything, so a transferable balance builds without category tracking, quarterly activation or spending calendars.
  • The Virgin Red relationship routes Capital One miles into Virgin Points, which reaches the ANA award — the program’s single most valuable redemption arrives through a back door most people miss.
  • Purchase Eraser gives a hard 1¢ floor against travel purchases already made, and it works retroactively for 90 days, so there is never urgency to redeem badly.
  • Transfers to the most useful partners — Aeroplan, Flying Blue, Avianca, Avios — are usually instant, and Capital One does not charge any transfer fee.

What Capital One Miles does badly

  • No US legacy airline partner and no major US hotel partner. There is no United, American, Delta, Alaska or Southwest, and no Hyatt, Marriott or Hilton — so both domestic flights and mainstream hotel stays are effectively outside the currency’s reach.
  • Three penalty ratios sit on genuinely useful partners: Singapore KrisFlyer and EVA Air at 2:1.5 and Accor at 2:1. Two of those are 25% haircuts on programs that other banks reach at 1:1.
  • Transfer bonuses are occasional and modest next to Amex’s near-monthly cadence, so there is little opportunity to buy in below face value.
  • Capital One Travel is a third-party booking channel; when an itinerary goes wrong, service recovery is materially worse than booking with the airline directly.
  • Application rules are opaque and Capital One is known to decline applicants who hold several of its cards, which limits how much of the ecosystem one person can assemble.

Do Capital One Miles miles expire?

Policy in full

Miles do not expire for the life of the account. There is no inactivity clock and no earning requirement. Closing the account forfeits any remaining balance, so transfer miles out to a partner before you close a Venture, VentureOne or Spark card. Miles cannot be moved between two different people’s Capital One accounts.

Expiration policy is the fact most worth checking before you build a balance and the one most often stated loosely elsewhere. An inactivity clock that any qualifying activity resets is a mild inconvenience; a hard deadline that runs from the day the points land is a different kind of risk entirely, and it changes whether a speculative transfer into this program is defensible at all.

Policy above verified against the program’s own terms on . If it has changed since, tell us and we will log the correction.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much is one Capital One Miles mile worth?

1.7¢ in the Award Rate Q3 2026 model. That is the median, not the maximum — half of the redemptions behind it returned less.
  • Is Capital One Miles better than Chase Ultimate Rewards, Bilt Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou Points?

Not on value per mile. Capital One Miles is worth 1.7¢ against 1.83¢, the median of the other 4 bank currencies we value, and Chase Ultimate Rewards leads the category at 1.9¢. Per-point value is not the whole comparison — how fast a program earns, and whether it has properties or routes where you actually travel, can outweigh it — but it is the part that is comparable, and this is where it lands. Every currency we value, side by side.
  • Which programs can I transfer Capital One Miles to?

Capital One Miles publishes 21 transfer partners. The ones worth using are Air Canada Aeroplan, Avianca LifeMiles, Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles; the full list, with ratios, transfer times and what one mile is worth after each conversion, is in the table on this page.
  • What is the biggest mistake people make with Capital One Miles?

Using the erase-a-purchase button out of habit and never learning the transfer side. It is the failure mode we see most often, and in a program with dynamic pricing there is no chart to fall back on when it goes wrong.

About the author

Editor, Award Rate

Nicholas Miles writes and maintains every page on Award Rate, and the site is built so that none of those pages has to be taken on faith: every card figure is rendered from a structured record that is checked against the issuer’s own pricing-and-terms disclosure, and the build fails if a number appears in prose instead. The points side of the site is lived-in rather than theoretical — Nicholas holds and tracks balances across ten loyalty programs — transferable bank currencies and the airline and hotel programs they feed — and recently took the family on a multi-stop award trip across Korea, Japan and Hawaii, flown mostly on points — the multi-seat, fixed-dates redemption problem most points advice quietly ignores. The conflicts that come with that are disclosed rather than hidden: the editor personally collects and redeems points in programs this site covers, the site is funded by affiliate commission disclosed on every offer page, and no issuer, airline or hotel group has any other relationship with it.

  • Personally earns, tracks and redeems points and miles across ten loyalty programs
  • Built the Award Rate card-data model and the verification gates every published figure must pass
