British Airways Executive Club: is it worth collecting?

Yes, for short flights. Avios price by distance band, which makes a short American or Alaska segment cheaper here than in any other program you can transfer into. British Airways’ own long-haul metal is the opposite case: the surcharges swallow the value.

Is British Airways Executive Club worth using?

Collect it if

  • You book short domestic hops on American or Alaska.
  • You hold Chase, Amex or Capital One points and want a cheap positioning ticket.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want transatlantic business class on British Airways metal.
  • You need a fixed price on longer routes; BA has moved its own flights toward demand pricing.

What is one British Airways Executive Club Avios point worth?

Short answer

1.35¢ in the Award Rate Q3 2026 model, derived from a smaller sample than the currencies in our headline model. Half of those redemptions returned less than that figure. It ranks 8 of 12 among the airline currencies we value, where the category median is 1.4¢.

How the number is derived

Derived from a 1,300-itinerary Avios sample split between short-haul partner segments — where the distance band produces genuinely cheap seats — and long-haul British Airways metal, where the carrier surcharge is subtracted from the value of the award before the ratio is computed. Netting the surcharge is the whole method here: an award that costs 60,000 Avios plus $700 is not a 2¢ redemption, and we do not report it as one.

British Airways Executive Club’s pricing mechanism

How does British Airways Executive Club price an award?

What it means in practice

Chart for partners, dynamic on its own flights. Partner awards price off a table; the program’s own flights price off the cash fare. In practice that means the currency has two completely different values depending on what you book, and the partner side is where the value is.

Read the pricing mechanism before the valuation, not after it. The valuation is a consequence of the mechanism rather than an independent fact about the program: a currency priced off the cash fare cannot beat the cash fare by much, however well you redeem, and a currency governed by a published table holds its value until the table changes.

How to earn British Airways Executive Club Avios points

Three routes into a British Airways Executive Club balance: flying British Airways Executive Club or its partners, a co-brand credit card, and — where the program is reachable — transferring from a bank currency. For most readers the third is the one that matters, because it converts spending on everything into a balance in a program you might only use once a year.

The redemptions that make British Airways Executive Club worth collecting

A currency is worth collecting because of specific redemptions, not because of an average. These are the ones that justify British Airways Executive Club, ranked by what one transferred point is worth when it lands.

  1. Chase Ultimate Rewards British Airways Executive Club1:1 · 1.35¢ per point transferred · Instant

Short-haul American and Alaska segments priced by distance band — the cheapest way to buy a domestic hop with points. Avoid BA’s own long-haul metal, where surcharges swallow the value.

  2. Bilt Rewards British Airways Executive Club1:1 · 1.35¢ per point transferred · Instant

Short-haul American and Alaska segments priced by distance band. Bilt reaches both AAdvantage and Avios, so you can price the same domestic hop two ways and take the cheaper.

  3. American Express Membership Rewards British Airways Executive Club1:1 · 1.35¢ per point transferred · Instant

Short-haul distance-band awards on American and Alaska, where a sub-650-mile segment costs a small fixed number of Avios.

  4. Capital One Miles British Airways Executive Club1:1 · 1.35¢ per point transferred · Instant

Short-haul American and Alaska segments priced by distance band, which is the cheapest domestic redemption reachable from Capital One given the absence of a US airline partner.

  5. Marriott Bonvoy British Airways Executive Club3:1, plus 5,000 bonus miles per 60,000 points transferred (2.4:1 at that increment) · 0.56¢ per point transferred · 24–72 hours

Short-haul distance-band awards on American or Alaska, where a small number of Avios buys a domestic segment — the one place a 3:1 conversion still leaves you ahead.

What British Airways Executive Club does well, and what it does badly

The weaknesses below are the reason the strengths are worth believing. Every one of them is something we have watched cost a reader money or a booking.

What British Airways Executive Club does well

  • Short-haul partner awards are priced by distance band, so a sub-650-mile American or Alaska flight costs a small, fixed number of Avios — the cheapest way to buy a domestic hop with points.
  • Avios are a shared currency across British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar and Finnair, and move between those programs free and instantly, so you can hold one balance and redeem wherever a route prices best.
  • Reward Flight Saver caps the cash component on short-haul awards, which is what makes the distance chart usable rather than theoretical.
  • The Household Account lets up to seven people at one address pool Avios into a single redeemable balance.
  • Four bank currencies reach Avios, and British Airways runs transfer bonuses from Chase and Amex several times a year.

What British Airways Executive Club does badly

  • Carrier-imposed surcharges on British Airways-operated long-haul awards regularly exceed $700 per person round trip in business class, which is enough to make the redemption worse than paying a discounted cash fare.
  • British Airways moved its own-metal awards to demand-based pricing in 2023, so the distance chart now reliably governs partner flights only — the chart people quote is not the chart most BA seats price from.
  • The peak and off-peak calendar is published a year ahead and the off-peak windows have shrunk in each of the last three revisions.
  • The 2025 move to spend-based tier points made status materially harder to earn for members based outside the UK.
  • Award availability on BA’s own transatlantic business cabin is thin at saver level and released in a pattern that rewards constant searching rather than planning.

Do British Airways Executive Club Avios points expire?

Policy in full

Avios expire after 36 months with no account activity. Any earning or spending resets the clock for the entire balance — a single Avios collected through a shopping portal, a co-brand card purchase, or a transfer in is enough. Because Avios move freely between British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar and Finnair, activity in one of those programs does not reset the others; each account has its own clock.

Expiration policy is the fact most worth checking before you build a balance and the one most often stated loosely elsewhere. An inactivity clock that any qualifying activity resets is a mild inconvenience; a hard deadline that runs from the day the points land is a different kind of risk entirely, and it changes whether a speculative transfer into this program is defensible at all.

Policy above verified against the program’s own terms on . If it has changed since, tell us and we will log the correction.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much is one British Airways Executive Club Avios point worth?

1.35¢ in the Award Rate Q3 2026 model. That is the median, not the maximum — half of the redemptions behind it returned less.
  • Is British Airways Executive Club better than Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, Air Canada Aeroplan, Alaska Atmos Rewards, American Airlines AAdvantage, Avianca LifeMiles, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Southwest Rapid Rewards, United MileagePlus, Air France-KLM Flying Blue and Delta SkyMiles?

Not on value per Avios point. British Airways Executive Club is worth 1.35¢ against 1.4¢, the median of the other 11 airline currencies we value, and Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles leads the category at 1.6¢. Per-point value is not the whole comparison — how fast a program earns, and whether it has properties or routes where you actually travel, can outweigh it — but it is the part that is comparable, and this is where it lands. Every currency we value, side by side.
  • Should I move Chase Ultimate Rewards or Bilt Rewards Avios points in first?

Chase Ultimate Rewards, on the arithmetic: it moves at 1:1, so one bank point lands as 1.35¢ of value here, against 1.35¢ from Bilt Rewards at 1:1. Where two ratios are equal the tie-breaker is what else each currency can do for you: spend the one with the thinner list of alternative uses and keep the flexible one. Either way the transfer is one-way, so price the award seat first. Both routes, with transfer times
  • What is the biggest mistake people make with British Airways Executive Club?

Redeeming on BA’s own long-haul, where the cash surcharge approaches the price of a discounted ticket. It is the failure mode we see most often, and in a program with dynamic pricing there is no chart to fall back on when it goes wrong.

About the author

Editor, Award Rate

Nicholas Miles writes and maintains every page on Award Rate, and the site is built so that none of those pages has to be taken on faith: every card figure is rendered from a structured record that is checked against the issuer’s own pricing-and-terms disclosure, and the build fails if a number appears in prose instead. The points side of the site is lived-in rather than theoretical — Nicholas holds and tracks balances across ten loyalty programs — transferable bank currencies and the airline and hotel programs they feed — and recently took the family on a multi-stop award trip across Korea, Japan and Hawaii, flown mostly on points — the multi-seat, fixed-dates redemption problem most points advice quietly ignores. The conflicts that come with that are disclosed rather than hidden: the editor personally collects and redeems points in programs this site covers, the site is funded by affiliate commission disclosed on every offer page, and no issuer, airline or hotel group has any other relationship with it.

How Award Rate makes money

Award Rate is an independent publisher and comparison service, not an investment or financial advisor. Some of the card offers on this site are from advertisers who compensate us when you are approved through our links. That compensation may affect where and in what order offers appear, but it never affects our ratings, our point valuations, or what we recommend.
