American Airlines AAdvantage: is it worth collecting?

Yes, if you can find the space. Web Special pricing discounts awards below the standard level more aggressively and more often than any other US program, and the oneworld partner list is the strongest in the alliance. Finding that space is the entire difficulty — much of it never displays online.

Is American Airlines AAdvantage worth using?

Collect it if

  • You will call to book partner space, or you genuinely enjoy the search.
  • You want Qatar Qsuite, Japan Airlines or Etihad business class within reach.

Look elsewhere if

  • You only ever search on the airline’s own website.
  • You want reliable availability rather than occasional exceptional pricing.

What is one American Airlines AAdvantage mile worth?

Short answer

1.45¢ in the Award Rate Q3 2026 model, the median of 13,200 sampled redemptions priced against the cash cost of the same seat on the same route and date. Half of those redemptions returned less than that figure. It ranks 4 of 12 among the airline currencies we value, where the category median is 1.4¢.

How the number is derived

The published Award Rate figure for AAdvantage miles, the median of 13,200 award-versus-cash pairs. Two things hold it above the other US programs: Web Special pricing, which regularly undercuts the standard level in both cabins, and partner business class on Qatar, Etihad and Japan Airlines, which prices off fixed levels rather than the fare. Thin partner availability is what keeps it from going higher.

American Airlines AAdvantage’s pricing mechanism

How does American Airlines AAdvantage price an award?

What it means in practice

Chart for partners, dynamic on its own flights. Partner awards price off a table; the program’s own flights price off the cash fare. In practice that means the currency has two completely different values depending on what you book, and the partner side is where the value is.

Read the pricing mechanism before the valuation, not after it. The valuation is a consequence of the mechanism rather than an independent fact about the program: a currency priced off the cash fare cannot beat the cash fare by much, however well you redeem, and a currency governed by a published table holds its value until the table changes.

How to earn American Airlines AAdvantage miles

Three routes into a American Airlines AAdvantage balance: flying American Airlines AAdvantage or its partners, a co-brand credit card, and — where the program is reachable — transferring from a bank currency. For most readers the third is the one that matters, because it converts spending on everything into a balance in a program you might only use once a year.

How to move points into American Airlines AAdvantage

One transferable bank currency reaches this program. The last column is what one bank point becomes once it lands here, at our Q3 2026 valuation of 1.45¢ per mile.

The redemptions that make American Airlines AAdvantage worth collecting

A currency is worth collecting because of specific redemptions, not because of an average. These are the ones that justify American Airlines AAdvantage, ranked by what one transferred point is worth when it lands.

  1. Bilt Rewards American Airlines AAdvantage1:1 · 1.45¢ per point transferred · Instant to 24 hours

AAdvantage Web Specials, which discount business class below the standard award level, and Qatar Qsuite awards priced at a fixed level. Bilt is the only transferable currency in the United States that reaches AAdvantage at all — that single relationship is the strongest argument for the program.

  2. Marriott Bonvoy American Airlines AAdvantage3:1, plus 5,000 bonus miles per 60,000 points transferred (2.4:1 at that increment) · 0.6¢ per point transferred · 24–72 hours

Worth considering only to top up an AAdvantage balance for a Web Special or a Qatar Qsuite award you have already found — never as a way to build one from scratch.

What American Airlines AAdvantage does well, and what it does badly

The weaknesses below are the reason the strengths are worth believing. Every one of them is something we have watched cost a reader money or a booking.

What American Airlines AAdvantage does well

  • Web Specials frequently price below the standard award level in every cabin, including business class on American’s own metal — no other US program discounts awards this aggressively or this often.
  • Partner premium cabins are priced at fixed levels: Qatar Qsuite, Etihad, Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific business class all have a knowable mileage cost that does not move with the cash fare.
  • AAdvantage is the cheapest reliable route into Qatar Qsuite from North America, and Bilt is the only bank currency that reaches it.
  • Loyalty Points made status attainable through everyday credit-card spend rather than flying, which is genuinely useful for people who cannot rearrange their travel around an airline.
  • Award holds and free changes on most tickets make speculative booking practical.

What American Airlines AAdvantage does badly

  • Partner award space for several of the best partners — Etihad, Malaysia, Royal Air Maroc — is not searchable on aa.com at all, so the highest-value redemptions require a phone agent, a partner’s own website to find the space first, and sometimes a supervisor.
  • Awards on American-operated flights outside Web Special pricing are dynamic with no published cap, and standard-level saver space on transatlantic business has become scarce.
  • Qatar has sharply reduced the saver space it releases to AAdvantage since 2023, which has quietly removed most of the program’s headline value.
  • Only one transferable bank currency reaches AAdvantage, and it is Bilt — a currency capped by rent spending. For most people the only practical earning route is a co-brand card or flying.
  • Miles expire on a 24-month inactivity clock, which is stricter than United or Delta.

Do American Airlines AAdvantage miles expire?

Policy in full

Miles expire after 24 consecutive months with no qualifying earning or redeeming activity. Any earning activity resets the clock — an AAdvantage co-brand credit card purchase, a shopping-portal order, a dining-program meal or a mileage-earning flight all count. Accounts belonging to members under 21 are exempt from expiration.

Expiration policy is the fact most worth checking before you build a balance and the one most often stated loosely elsewhere. An inactivity clock that any qualifying activity resets is a mild inconvenience; a hard deadline that runs from the day the points land is a different kind of risk entirely, and it changes whether a speculative transfer into this program is defensible at all.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much is one American Airlines AAdvantage mile worth?

1.45¢ in the Award Rate Q3 2026 model. That is the median, not the maximum — half of the redemptions behind it returned less.
  • Is American Airlines AAdvantage better than Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, Air Canada Aeroplan, Alaska Atmos Rewards, Avianca LifeMiles, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, British Airways Executive Club, Southwest Rapid Rewards, United MileagePlus, Air France-KLM Flying Blue and Delta SkyMiles?

Not on value per mile. American Airlines AAdvantage is worth 1.45¢ against 1.4¢, the median of the other 11 airline currencies we value, and Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles leads the category at 1.6¢. Per-point value is not the whole comparison — how fast a program earns, and whether it has properties or routes where you actually travel, can outweigh it — but it is the part that is comparable, and this is where it lands. Every currency we value, side by side.
  • How do I get American Airlines AAdvantage miles?

Bilt Rewards transfer into American Airlines AAdvantage, both at 1:1. Transfers are one-way and no bank has ever reversed one, so confirm the award seat is bookable before you move anything.
  • What is the biggest mistake people make with American Airlines AAdvantage?

Concluding a route has no award space because aa.com did not show it. It is the failure mode we see most often, and in a program with dynamic pricing there is no chart to fall back on when it goes wrong.

About the author

Editor, Award Rate

Nicholas Miles writes and maintains every page on Award Rate, and the site is built so that none of those pages has to be taken on faith: every card figure is rendered from a structured record that is checked against the issuer’s own pricing-and-terms disclosure, and the build fails if a number appears in prose instead. The points side of the site is lived-in rather than theoretical — Nicholas holds and tracks balances across ten loyalty programs — transferable bank currencies and the airline and hotel programs they feed — and recently took the family on a multi-stop award trip across Korea, Japan and Hawaii, flown mostly on points — the multi-seat, fixed-dates redemption problem most points advice quietly ignores. The conflicts that come with that are disclosed rather than hidden: the editor personally collects and redeems points in programs this site covers, the site is funded by affiliate commission disclosed on every offer page, and no issuer, airline or hotel group has any other relationship with it.

How Award Rate makes money

Award Rate is an independent publisher and comparison service, not an investment or financial advisor. Some of the card offers on this site are from advertisers who compensate us when you are approved through our links. That compensation may affect where and in what order offers appear, but it never affects our ratings, our point valuations, or what we recommend. We do not review every card on the market, and card offers displayed here may not include all available offers.

Where the numbers come from

Our editorial team writes and scores every review before any commercial arrangement is considered. Issuers do not review, approve, or endorse our content.
