Citi Double Cash® Card Review: A Debt Payoff Tool That Becomes a Flat-Rate Card

Take the Double Cash if you are consolidating credit card debt and want the longest realistic interest-free runway from a major issuer. Once the balance is clear it becomes a no-fee flat-rate card with nothing to track. Skip it if you intend to carry a balance and earn rewards at the same time — the second half of its rate only pays as you pay down.

Updated Card terms verified

Who should get the Double Cash — and who should skip it

Four things decide this: whether you have ever transferred points, whether you were buying it for a specific transfer partner, whether you are under 5/24, and — the one that overrides the other three — whether you carry a balance.

The reason to open this card is almost always debt, and it is worth being blunt about that. If you are carrying a balance at a revolving rate, moving it here and paying it down inside the intro window is worth more than any rewards card on this site will ever earn you. Nothing in the points hobby competes with not paying interest.

Afterwards, it is a perfectly good keep-forever card: no fee, no categories, no activation, and a flat rate on everything. If you also hold a Citi travel card, the rewards become transferable, which lifts a plain cash-back card into genuinely useful territory.

Skip it if you are shopping for a rewards card and have no debt to move. The flat rate is matched or beaten by several no-fee competitors that also earn category bonuses, and this card charges a foreign transaction fee they do not.

What is the Double Cash welcome offer worth?

The offer is a statement credit, and the number that matters is not the headline — it is what the headline converts to at a redemption value we publish and defend. Here is the whole calculation.

The current offer
$200 after you spend $1,500 on purchases in the first 6 months from account opening, awarded as ThankYou® Points, redeemable for cash back as a direct deposit, a statement credit or a check
Value of the offer
$200
Spending required to earn it
$1,500 in 6 months
Which means, per month
$250on ordinary purchases, from account opening
First-year value: offer + credits we count − year-one fee
$200

The welcome offer is small and is awarded as points redeemable for cash, a statement credit or a check. It is not a reason to choose this card and should not be treated as one.

The requirement is light and clears on ordinary spending in the window. If you are opening the card for a balance transfer, note that the transfer itself does not count toward the spending requirement — that is the most common misunderstanding with this product.

How fast does the Double Cash earn?

The multiplier is only half of an earn rate. The other half is what the currency is worth, and a high multiplier on a weak currency loses to a low multiplier on a strong one. The right-hand column below is the one to read: it multiplies each rate by our published valuation to give what a dollar of spending in that category actually returns.

Double Cash earning rates, converted to cents back per dollarRates as published by Citi and verified . The final column applies our published valuation of Cash Back — 1.0¢ per point — to each rate. Categories are grouped by multiplier; a category with no note beneath it is uncapped. How we value points.

  • Hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through the Citi Travel portalCiti lists this in the standing terms rather than as a limited-time offer: 3 points on top of the 1 you earn when you buy and the 1 you earn as you pay. Only the portion of a booking paid with the card earns, and cancelled bookings earn nothing.
5.0¢
2%
  • Every purchase — 1% when you buy, plus another 1% as you pay the balance offThe pay-back half posts only against your Purchase Tracker — the running balance of purchases less payments already rewarded — so once the Tracker reaches $0 further payments earn nothing until you spend again. Only payments totalling at least the Minimum Payment Due count, and balance transfers and cash advances are not purchases, so neither half is earned on them.
2.0¢

Everything outside those categories earns 2%, which is 2.0¢ back per dollar at our valuation. That is the rate most of a normal household’s spending earns, so it deserves more weight than the headline multiplier when you compare cards.

The flat rate is paid in two halves: part when the purchase posts and part when you pay it off. Paid in full every month, the two halves arrive close together and the card behaves like an ordinary flat-rate earner.

Carry a balance and the second half is delayed or suppressed while interest accrues, which is the structural reason this card should never be used to earn rewards and revolve at the same time.

The portal category earns more on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through Citi’s own channel. As with every issuer portal, check the cash price before you chase the multiplier.

What are the Double Cash perks actually worth?

This card carries no statement credits, which is worth stating plainly rather than treating as an absence. A card with no credits is a card with nothing to enroll in, nothing to claim monthly and nothing to audit in December — and our net annual cost figure for it is therefore unusually reliable, because there is no gap between the benefits on paper and the benefits people actually receive.

  • Rewards convert to transferable points when paired. Earnings post as ThankYou Points. Hold a Citi Strata Premier alongside this card and they become transferable to airline and hotel partners instead of capping out at cash value — the single highest-leverage move available to a Double Cash holder.
  • Citi Entertainment presale access. Cardholder presales and reserved tickets for concerts, sport and dining events.
  • No annual fee. The flat earn rate applies from the first dollar with no fee to recover.
  • $0 liability on unauthorized charges. Standard Citi fraud protection, with account alerts and virtual account numbers.

There is essentially nothing here, and the card is honest about that: no annual fee, no credits, no lounge access, no enrollment. What it has is a long intro window on balance transfers and a fee structure that makes moving a balance economically sensible.

The one benefit worth knowing about is the conversion path: rewards post as points, and paired with a Citi travel card they become a transferable currency rather than a cash rebate. That turns a flat-rate cash card into a flat-rate points card at no cost.

The foreign transaction fee is the notable omission on the wrong side of the ledger. This is a domestic card.

How do you redeem Cash Back?

By default, redemption is cash — statement credit, direct deposit or check — at face value, with no valuation to argue about and no way to do it badly.

Paired with a Citi travel card, the same balance transfers to eighteen airline and hotel partners, including two carriers whose partner business-class pricing is the lowest available from any US currency. That path roughly doubles what the points return.

If you have no Citi travel card, plan on the cash value and do not let anyone tell you the points are worth more than that.

Our rating, axis by axis

Every card in the Award Rate database is scored on the same five axes, by the same people, before any commercial arrangement is considered. The rationale below is the reasoning, not a summary of the number.

Award Rate rating: Double Cash

4.1out of 5

Rewards valueWhat a normal spending year earns, priced at our published point valuations.
Perks & creditsBenefit value after discounting the credits most people never fully use.
Fee justificationWhat comes back to you measured against what the card costs to keep.
FlexibilityHow many ways the currency moves, and how good the best of those ways are.

Why this score: Perfect on fee justification because it costs nothing to hold and its earning rate is competitive from the first dollar. Rewards value is strong but not exceptional: the flat rate beats most cards on unbonused spending and loses to every good category card on bonused spending, and half of it only materializes as you repay. Perks score near the bottom of our range — there is essentially nothing here beyond the balance-transfer offer. The rating reflects a card that does two specific jobs extremely well and every other job adequately at worst.

What we like

  • The balance-transfer window is among the longest offered by a major issuer, and the transfer fee is discounted if you move the balance early
  • The flat rate applies to every purchase with no caps, no categories and no quarterly enrollment
  • No annual fee, so the card can sit in a drawer as a category backstop at zero cost
  • Earnings post as ThankYou Points, which become transferable to airline and hotel partners if you also hold a Citi travel card
  • Long account history on a no-fee card is quietly useful — this is a card you can keep open indefinitely

What we don’t

  • There are no bonus categories at all, so any well-matched category card will out-earn it on the spending that matters most
  • A foreign transaction fee applies, which makes the card unusable abroad and is unusual for a card marketed as an everyday default
  • Half the rewards rate is contingent on paying the balance down, so the headline rate overstates what a revolving cardholder actually earns
  • Balance transfers earn nothing and do not count toward the welcome offer’s spending requirement
  • Travel and purchase protections are thin compared with cards from every other major issuer

Is it worth keeping in year two?

Nothing to decide — the card costs nothing to keep and helps your credit profile by extending your average account age and total available credit. If you opened it to clear a balance, keep it open after the balance is gone rather than closing it; closing reduces available credit and raises your utilization ratio at exactly the moment you have finished repairing it.

What to consider instead of the Double Cash

These are the cards we would genuinely put in front of the same reader. Sort the table by whichever column is binding for you — net annual cost matters if you are fee-sensitive, first-year value if you are optimizing a single year.

The card we score highest here is not the one you clicked on: it is the Strata Premier. The badge on the Double Cash row says Reviewed here rather than Our pick because that is all it means — it marks the subject of this page, not a recommendation. Our scores are set before any commercial arrangement is considered, and we would rather publish the contradiction than hide it: if the rating column disagrees with the page you landed on, the rating column is the one to read.

The Double Cash against the alternatives we would recommend to the same reader — welcome offer, annual fee, net annual cost after usable credits, and our score. Strata Premier
Wins as the partner card that turns these rewards into transferable points, and earns far faster on ordinary household categories.
Venture
Wins if you want travel rewards rather than a rebate and are willing to pay a modest fee for a real transfer list.

Will you be approved? The rules that get people declined

Being declined is the reader’s real risk on this page. A rejection costs a hard inquiry and leaves you with nothing, and in almost every case the reason is an issuer rule rather than your credit score. Citi applies the following to this card. None of them are published as policy, and none of them have an appeal.

Credit profile expected by Citi for this product: Good to Excellent (690+). A score inside that band does not guarantee approval, and nothing on this page should be read as a prediction of one — issuers weigh income, existing exposure and account history alongside the score.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is the Citi Double Cash good for a balance transfer?

It is one of the better options from a major issuer, with an unusually long intro window on transfers. Two conditions decide whether it works: the transfer must post inside the window the terms specify, and you cannot transfer a balance from another Citi account. Run the arithmetic on the transfer fee against the interest you would otherwise pay — for most balances the fee is far smaller than the interest, but for a small balance being paid off quickly it may not be.

  • How does the Double Cash rewards structure actually work?

Half the rate is earned when a purchase posts and the other half is earned as you pay that purchase off. If you pay your statement in full each month the two halves arrive together and it behaves like an ordinary flat-rate card. If you revolve a balance, the second half is delayed while interest accrues — which is why the card is a poor choice for earning rewards and carrying debt simultaneously.

  • Can Citi Double Cash rewards be transferred to airlines?

Only if you also hold a Citi card that permits transfers, such as the Strata Premier. Rewards on the Double Cash post as ThankYou Points, and pairing the accounts lets you move them to Citi’s eighteen airline and hotel partners rather than taking cash. Without that pairing they are worth their face value in cash and nothing more.

About the author

Editor, Award Rate

Nicholas Miles writes and maintains every page on Award Rate, and the site is built so that none of those pages has to be taken on faith: every card figure is rendered from a structured record that is checked against the issuer’s own pricing-and-terms disclosure, and the build fails if a number appears in prose instead. The points side of the site is lived-in rather than theoretical — Nicholas holds and tracks balances across ten loyalty programs — transferable bank currencies and the airline and hotel programs they feed — and recently took the family on a multi-stop award trip across Korea, Japan and Hawaii, flown mostly on points — the multi-seat, fixed-dates redemption problem most points advice quietly ignores. The conflicts that come with that are disclosed rather than hidden: the editor personally collects and redeems points in programs this site covers, the site is funded by affiliate commission disclosed on every offer page, and no issuer, airline or hotel group has any other relationship with it.

How Award Rate makes money

Award Rate is an independent publisher and comparison service, not an investment or financial advisor. Some of the card offers on this site are from advertisers who compensate us when you are approved through our links. That compensation may affect where and in what order offers appear, but it never affects our ratings, our point valuations, or what we recommend. We do not review every card on the market, and card offers displayed here may not include all available offers.

Our editorial team writes and scores every review before any commercial arrangement is considered. Issuers do not review, approve, or endorse our content.
